Glyphosate and Celiac

Is there a link between Glyphosate and Celiac Disease?

There most certainly is.

So what is Glyphosate(Roundup) anyways?

Glyphosate is a herbicide used by Monsanto to kill weeds and grasses that compete with GMO crops. The wheat fields and the corn fields, etc are sprayed with glyphosate to preserve the life of the crops. It is currently the worlds most heavily used herbicide. It is also used on non GMO crop, but is heavily used with GMO’s because they are engineered to withstand high amounts of this Roundup. Recently, more studies are showing the horrible effects of glyphosate on human health, and for my personal interest, the link between glyphosate and celiac.

But it is not just celiac disease that is linked to glyphosate, most chronic health conditons that have gone rampant in the last 10 years can be traced right back to this dangerous substance. These include:

Crohns/Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Multiple Sclerosis

Oh my! This is a HUGE problem! Everybody knows someone who suffers from one of these ailments. Glyphosate toxicity and glyphosate poisoning are also very real. Read more about it here.

According to Monsanto, they claim glyphosate and GMO’s are safe. Wrong. Glyphosate is claimed to be safe as the method that is used for killing weeds; the “shikimate pathway” is not present in animals. BUT, it IS present in bacteria! If you have read my article about the human microbiome, you will see how essential bacteria are to our health. Gut bacteria are the sole drivers of our health. You are made up of more bacteria in your body then you are your own human cells. These critters are what sustain us, and it is becoming more widely known that imbalances in gut bacteria, and not enough good bacteria are a major cause of all kinds of disease. All bacteria contains the shikimate pathway, meaning they all will react in the presence of glyphosate.

Celiac Disease is not entirely genetic. Only party so. About 30% of the world population carries the gene for celiac disease, but not everyone develops it, only about 3%. These I must say, are old statistics though. Celiac has been on the rise the last 10 years, and that’s why it is now more common to see gluten free products. All chronic disease have been on the rise. It is a direct correlation to our current food supply. I suffer from Celiac disease, my mother does and a couple friends. Others have different autoimmune diseases.

So back to the bacteria. Glyphosate has a direct affect on our beneficial bacteria. These helpful bacteria are the ones that keep the bad bacteria(such as yeast, parasites, and other pathogens) in check. All of us have bad bacteria in our bodies, so it’s silly to try to eliminate them all, as they do serve a purpose. But when the bacteria balance becomes disrupted, and good bacteria get wiped out, pathogenic bacteria have a perfect environment to take over and will cause inflammation throughout the body while releasing their toxic waste. There really is no end to the amount of damage too much bad bacteria and viruses can cause.

In this scholarly article,Glyphosate, pathways to modern diseases II: Celiac sprue and gluten intolerance it is stated that fish who were given glyphosate experienced digestive problems that mimicked those of celiac disease. They mention that characteristics of celiac show impairment of the P450 enzymes, which is directly cause by glyphosate! These enzymes are needed to detoxify environmental toxins, activate vitamin D3 in our bodies, catabolize vitamin A as well as produce our bile which helps us to create stomach acid to break down our food. Glyphosate is also disrupting the transport of sulfate to the body and the biosynthesis of amino acids by our gut bacteria. So we are also low in essential amino acids we need to repair.

Are any of you suffering from nutritonal deficiencies? I have suffered with this since I was quite young. Even more recently in the last 10 years. I believe I had celiac disease most of my life, misdiagnosed, which is a malabsorption disorder. Well glyphosate has chelating properties that carry out iron, copper, molybdenum, and cobalt from the body. We need these elements in our body! No wonder so many suffer from anemia. Infertility issues? Glyphosate. Direct cause of miscarriages, birth defects, and autism. Autism rates used to be 1 in every 10,000 children. Now the ratio is 1 in 50. Absoultely nuts. These defects are all symptoms of celiac disease as well, and these are all linked back to this crazy weed killer glyphosate.

So is there a link between Celiac disease and Glyphosate? Of course. The government needs to do something about this, but I am not sure that they will. I mean, they follow the money right? Genetically modified organisms and their herbicides are genetically modifying our own bodies, yes, scary thought, but reality.

What should you do?

The only real option here is to go organic. They are messinng around with nature and thus screwing up our good gut bacteria and screwing up the balance. Remember that you gut bacteria are your immune system. They are what protect you and when your army of microbes are missing you become very ill. Ill like our whole society currently. Of course get the gluten out of your diet, this is key. Corn and soy as well. If you can find organic non-gmo corn you should be okay. But 90% of all corn and soy produced in the west is GMO. This is the scary reality of western society, and while 18 countries banned the use of GMO’s the States is trying to ban the use of GMO labelling. I don’t believe they will stop producing these frankenfoods anytime soon.

My personal opinion, get out of western society if you can help it. I understand this is not an option for most people though, although it could be. Be cautious with the foods you eat, wash all your fruits and vegetables well with soap and water and please go organic. If you are like me and suffer from an autoimmune disorder such as celiac disease, eating clean and organic is even more important. You want to support your immune system, not damage it.

I hope to see this epidemic change one day soon but for now be aware of the effects of herbicides such as glyphosate.
